Gold Deathlayer Day Old Chicks

The Deathlayer Chicken is a landrace breed originating from Westphalia, Germany. Officially, the name is Westfalische Totleger, and there are two tales that explain the origins of the name. One is that they’re a “day layer” and over time the translation switched to death layer. The other story would suggest that the name derives from a chicken that will lay an egg per day until they die. Both stories accurately describe a proficient egg layer that will provide an abundance of medium-sized white eggs.

Meyer Hatchery is excited to offer the Gold Deathlayer. With just under 1500 registered birds left in Germany, our breeding program along with our customer’s enthusiasm for beautiful birds is sure to help secure their population in the US.

This is an excellent breed choice for small-scale egg producers or for backyard keepers who want to add more color to their flocks. They’re an active forager and will roost in trees if given the opportunity. Gold Deathlayers are gold and black with iridescent green and purple highlights, black eyes, and a cushion comb.

Average mature weight: Roosters 5 lbs., Hens 3.5 lbs. Meyer Hatchery will be offering females only.
