Grey Peacock Pheasants, also known as the Chinquis Peacock pheasants or the Burmese Peacock, are the national bird of Myanmar (Burma) and have their origins in the tropical forest areas of Burma, Thailand, and Southeast Asia. These birds will do quite well in an aviary setting, provided there is ample shelter for them during the colder winter months. Some breeders have been known to heat their structure during the colder months. Shrubbery and trees are recommended for plentiful shade in the summer months.

Grey Peacock Pheasants reach an adult average body length of approximately 29 inches and will be covered by a mottled grey plumage that is decorated with dark grey, white or buff eye spots. Peacock Pheasants are not peacocks but are rather named for their feathering. The males will have metallic green-blue ocelli or “eyespot” on their feathers; females will not. Otherwise, the males and females will look the same, with the females being slightly smaller.

Grey Peacock Pheasants consume a diet consisting mainly of seeds, fruits, greens, and invertebrates such as termites, spiders, earthworms, millipedes, and snails. You will also want to provide them with a standard game bird feed and a fresh supply of drinking water.

Grey Peacock Pheasants are quite tame and do not generally become aggressive towards each other, making them a great choice for beginners. The breeding season begins in March and typically runs through July, and 2 hens can be paired with 1 male. Females will lay a clutch of only 1-2 eggs, with incubation lasting approximately 21 days. If these eggs are collected, it is possible for a female to lay another clutch of 1-2 eggs.
