Lavender Ameraucana Day Old Chicks

The Ameraucana breed of chicken was developed in the United States in the 1970s. The breed’s most striking features are their slate or black legs and the fact that they lay blue-tinted eggs. Ameraucanas have both beards and muffs. Their pea comb makes them a great bird for colder climates. They typically have quiet and calm personalities. You can expect 4-6 blue or green eggs per week from these hens. According to the Ameraucana Breeders Club (ABC) color chart, Ameraucanas can lay shades of green. While it is not desired, a green egg does not indicate that they are not pure Ameraucanas.

The Lavender color variation is also called “self-blue” and will breed true. You can expect all lavender-colored chicks from pure lavender parents. The lavender color is similar to the blue coloring but is generally lighter in appearance than the blue. The American Poultry Association does recognize the self-blue color variety (APA doesn’t call it Lavender) in the Ameraucana breed. So, this breed is a great choice for those interested in exhibiting in shows. Read more about the Ameraucana Chicken on our Breed Spotlight over on the Meyer Hatchery Blog.
