The North American Pintail duck, Anas acuta, also called Northern Pintail ducks, are graceful flyers with striking plumage, are easy to keep in captivity, are non-aggressive and do well in a mixed group of ducks.

North American Pintails will normally nest on the ground in low or sparse vegetation somewhat close to water. Their clutch will be between 7-9 cream colored eggs. The shallow nest is built from twigs and grasses and lined with feathers. The eggs hatch in 22-24 days and the ducklings fledge in about 7 weeks. North American Pintails in the wild consume primarily aquatic invertebrates, roots and shoots, and seeds. Ducks kept in captivity can be fed an all-species crumble and supplemented with grasses and clumps of earth to satisfy their desire to forage.

The North American Pintail is a medium-sized duck with a long, thin neck. The males have a white chest, white stripe up their neck and have a dark reddish-brown head. They are easy to identify as they have extremely long necks and pointed tails.
