If you are looking for a unique swan to add to your pond or lake, then Whooper pronounced “Hooper” is the swan for you. The Whooper Swan, “Cygnus cygnus”, has a large white body with a long thin neck, which is usually held upright. They have black legs with a black bill. The bill has a triangular yellow patch on it, which is unique to each Whooper Swan. Juveniles are brown and gray and have more of a pink and yellow beak. As they reach full maturity they will develop the Whooper Swan look.

The Whooper Swans are a larger bird weighing 25-30 lbs. They are known to be one of the heaviest flying birds in the world. The wingspan of the Whooper Swan is 80-102 inches wide. Whooper Swans aren’t as picky in regards to their habitat, liking swamps, fields, farmland, and other coastal areas. Just be sure they have plenty of open water as they spend most of their time on the water, eating the vegetation in the shallow depths. In captivity, swans can also be fed a waterfowl feed as well as supplemental greens and veggies.

If you plan to breed the Whooper Swans, they require a sheltered, more secluded nesting area for breeding to be successful. Breeding season for the Whooper Swans starts in Mid-May, producing a clutch of 5-10 eggs. The incubation period is approximately 31 days. Whooper Swans mate for life with 1 partner. The cygnets will stay with their parents through their first winter. The male Whooper Swan will guard the female and eggs, and actually help to raise the cygnets when they hatch.
